COURSE OVERVEW
Through lecture, various workshops, and hands-on projects students will explore the video production process, including: preproduction (planning), production (shooting your video), and post production (editing).
The class will meet one night a week over an eight week period and will conclude with the completion of a class project.
The project will include elements of both field and in-studio production, and will be aired on the town’s local cable access channel.
COURSE OBJECTIVE
When completed, students will have an understanding of the video production process, equipment usage, and the procedures for producing and airing their own video programs.
In addition, students completing the course will have access to all video production equipment and facilities.
GRADING: Students will not be graded, although class attendance and active participation in class discussion and workshops is required. Students shall purchase a 3-ring binder to collect all class materials and handouts as they become available.
WEEK-BY-WEEK COURSE OUTLINE
Week One: Introduction to the course, the Instructor, students, class goals, the Cable facilities and channels, and a beginning to your video production journey: pre-production, writing scripts and treatments. Students Must Be ready to “Pitch” their video idea next class.
Week Two: A general overview of Digital Video Camera operations, including composition, focus, camera movement, and helpful techniques. Students should have a solid project idea to “Pitch” to the class. Suggestions, questions, concerns about any project will be openly discussed. Write first draft script, definitive treatment for next class.
Week Three: Introduction to Audio Equipment and techniques. Students will need to have a definitive treatment of their project- a "first draft" script to share with class. Final scripts for next class.
Week Four: Introduction to lighting techniques and principles. Students will need to have their final scripts, pre-production plans and be ready to shoot. Students can sign out equipment, minors be ready to have an adult sign off for you, please.
Week Five: Basics of Digital Video Editing on iMac/iMovie software. All projects should be in production phase. Project check-in and open discussion in class. Be ready to start editing next week.
Week Six: All projects should be finished Production Phase, ready to edit. Project check-in. Uploading of video files should begin during class, possible editing as well.
Week Seven: All projects need to be in Post-Production Phase, editing and finishing up. Projects need to be ready to view IN-CLASS at Producer’s RoundTable.
Week Eight – Producer’s RoundTable Shooting: In-Studio production showcasing students’ videos and students’ reflections surrounding the class, the journey, and the process of meeting their goals. 9am show up, 9:30am shoot time.
