COURSE OVERVEW
Through lecture, various workshops, and hands-on projects students will explore the video production process, including: preproduction (planning), production (shooting your video), and post production (editing).
The class will meet one night a week over an eight week period and will conclude with the completion of a class project.
The project will include elements of both field and in-studio production, and will be aired on the town’s local cable access channel.
COURSE OBJECTIVE
When completed, students will have an understanding of the video production process, equipment usage, and the procedures for producing and airing their own video programs.
In addition, students completing the course will have access to all video production equipment and facilities.
GRADING: Students will not be graded, although class attendance and active participation in class discussion and workshops is required. Students shall purchase a 3-ring binder to collect all class materials and handouts as they become available.
WEEK-BY-WEEK COURSE OUTLINE
WEEK ONE: Introduction and overview of local cable access channels and facilities; introduction to the video production process with emphasis on preproduction, including: writing treatments, television scripts, and storyboard creation.
WEEK TWO: Cameras/cinematography: an overview of camera operation both in-studio and in the field; including general use, composition, focus, camera movement, and helpful techniques.
WEEK THREE: Audio/sound: introduction to audio equipment, including in-studio and field audio recording techniques.
WEEK FOUR: Lighting: introduction to television lighting equipment and basic lighting principles.
WEEK FIVE: Editing: introduction to digital editing equipment and the editing, or post-production process.
WEEK SIX: In-Studio Production: introduction to in-studio television production equipment and techniques.
Student’s individual projects will be at the post production stage as of this class, and students will be required to schedule editing time with available instructors.
WEEK SEVEN: Students will discuss their ongoing individual production, and dedicate this class to post production editing time.
WEEK EIGHT: Students will have completed their individual productions, and the class will shoot the in-studio “Producers Roundtable” program.
