COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT PROJECTS

In addition to assisting Applicants navigate thru the permitting process, assisting Boards and Committees in permit application review, The Community Development Department (CDD) co-ordinates many projects within the Town on an ongoing basis. The following projects are highlighted samples of the Departments capabilities.

~ HEMLOCK STREET RECONSTRUCTION~

Plans are being prepared and permitted with the Conservation Commission for the Reconstruction of approximately 3,000 feet of Hemlock Street. Hemlock Street has been an ongoing maintenance issue for the Town and this project is being put forth to mitigate the drainage issues. Construction is planned for summer/fall 2007.

~ POST OFFICE PARKING LOT ~

Plans are being prepared for bid for the Post Office Parking Lot Expansion project. The project will net an additional 15 parking spaces near the rear of Williams Jumbo Donuts/Subway. Bidding is set to occur this winter for construction this spring. Click the image to the left to see a .pdf file of the drawing. Construction is planned for summer/fall 2007.

~ SCHOOL CONNECTOR ROADS ~

The first school "Connector Road" project entailed designing and bidding a paved road to connect the Gleason Court Elementary School to the Davis Street Middle School. This project was intended to eliminate the need for school busses to turn in and out of Gleason Court at Main Street (Rt 16). The result would be an improved traffic flow pattern in the heart of our downtown area. This also provided a campus atmosphere and interconnectivity between the schools that both staff and parents can enjoy. the project also added 50 parking spaces to the schools which were in dire need of additional parking. Currently, discussions and design is underway for a second "connector road" to include the Douglas High School with interconnectivity and alternate means of access/egress to and from the site.

~ DISPOSAL OF REAL PROPERTY ~

The Community Development Department developed and coordinated the acquisition of the so-called "Chamberlain Property" - a parcel of land that was held in MGL Chapter 61. The Board of Selectmen, with unanimous support of the Boards & Committees within the Town, voted to act on their right of first refusal to acquire the property. After Town Meeting vote authorized the funding, the Town sold 4 lots and now has 90 acres of land for their use.

~ NPDES COMPLIANCE~

The Community Development Department is assisting the Board of Selectmen in the federal and State NPDES stormwater permitting and reporting.

~ MAPPING OF CEMETERY~

The Community Development Department is assisting the cemetery commission with the survey of the Town-owned cemeteries in Douglas.
