CEMETERY COMMISSIONER’S MEETING
AUGUST 5, 2019
Municipal Center Resource Room: CRA Sarah Guimond

MEETING CALLED TO ORDER: 7:10 P.M.
The meeting was called to order by Shirley Cooney at 7:05pm

ATTENDANCE:
Chairperson Shirley Cooney, Jean Dwinnell, Betsy Youngsma

QUORUM:
A quorum is present.

READING AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES: A motion to accept the Minutes of the July 1, 2019 meeting was made by Jean Dwinnell and seconded by Shirley Cooney. Motion so passed.

CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT: Shirley Cooney reported that the keeping up of the cemetery grounds is being continued as usual.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Betsy Youngsma reported that the bill for mowing was been paid. She also reported that she had sold a grave site to Cheryl A. and Raymond Duke.

OLD BUSINESS: Relocation of the Rose of Sharon will be done at a later date to ensure that the plants will not suffer from replanting mid-season. It was also noted that the markings on the plots were covered over when new loam was spread. They have to be marked again before the Rose of Sharon is relocated to ensure that they are not planted over a grave site. Betsy will check with John Furno as to whether or not there would be a charge to have to lots marked out again.

Betsy stated that she would like to review the recommended work present by Full Circle Tree before voting on the items. She would also like to know what herbicide they use to remove growth.

It was decide that at this time we do not need to invite John Furno to a meeting regarding tree removal in the cemeteries. At this time there are no trees that need to be removed so this meeting will not be required at this time.

NEW BUSINESS: Betsy suggested that we consider for future projects recommendations for cemetery care as described in the Preservation Guidelines For Municipally Owned Historic Burial Grounds and Cemeteries book put out by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management Historic Cemeteries Preservation Initiative.

Shirley asked to Betsy to see if she could look for and recommendations that would match up with the recommendations from Full Circle Tree.

Betsy informed us that she has arranged for three estimates for restoration of the iron work, gate and stone posts at the Wallis Family Plot, repairs to the stone wall that was damaged, and stone steps on the South West Main Street side of the cemetery. She also mentioned the possibility of placing a sign in the front showing the name of the cemetery.

Open session for topics not reasonably anticipated 48 hours in advance of meeting.

Next Meeting: The next meeting will be September 9, 2019 at the Douglas Municipal Center

Adjournment: A motion to adjourn was made at 7:39 P.M. by Jean Dwinnell, seconded by Betsy Youngsma. Motion so passed.

Respectfully Submitted,

Jean Dwinnell, Secretary
