A significant inflow of settlers followed the Civil War, including not just soldiers, but also people from the eastern half of the country. The westward movement continued in the 1870s, with additional wanderers settling on the Perry Prairie and in the nearby hamlet of Jesup, respectively. In January 1876, the residents were persuaded to form a corporation.
