The state name Mississippi comes from an Indian phrase that translates to ″Father of Waters,″ and it is one of those terms that need careful spelling. I’ve heard it spelt Mississippy, Missippi, and Mississipi, in addition to a whole bunch of other ways. Why couldn’t they have thought of a name that was more straightforward, like Nile?
