For its own sake, the Iron Mountain Road is a beautiful piece of art. In between Custer State Park and Mount Rushmore National Memorial, the route travels through some of the most stunning scenery in the Black Hills, including three tunnels that frame Mount Rushmore National Memorial in the distance.

Can you see Mount Rushmore from Custer State Park?
As a result of a recommendation we received before to our trip to the Black Hills, we decided to travel this route from Custer State Park to Mount Rushmore. Because the views of Mount Rushmore from many miles away were spectacular, and they couldn’t be seen from any other route, especially when viewed through the tunnels, I am really grateful that we did.
What is it like to drive through Custer State Park?
You must drive every route in and through Custer State Park; you will be amazed by how many diverse things there are to dazzle your senses on your journey around the park. It’s as though every curve of the two-lane twisting road is a new and incredible photography opportunity.
Can you do Mt Rushmore and Custer State Park in one day?
Mt Rushmore and Custer State Park can both easily accomplished in a single day. What activities do you hope to participate in while visiting Custer State Park? If you’re looking for a gorgeous trek, I’d recommend either the Sunday Gulch path (2.5 hours) or Harney Peak trail (4 hours), both of which begin at Sylvan Lake and are both very short.

How long does it take to drive the Needles Highway?
The winding roads that wind their way through the park are best pleasant at a leisurely speed. When planning travel arrangements, please allow plenty of time to travel at a safe speed—generally no more than 25 miles per hour. Needles Highway is around 45 to 60 minutes away, so plan on spending 45 to 60 minutes driving.
Can you see Mount Rushmore from highway 16?
It is, in fact, 16a. In the area between my rushmore and the intersection of play house rd/16a is where the tunnels with views of rushmore may be found. After passing through this crossroads, 16a continues southward until it reaches the east entrance to Custer State Park.

The view is breathtaking and very gorgeous. Trails for hiking that are beautiful (can get hot so bring water). It is absolutely worthwhile to pay a visit to. The scenery is spectacular simply by passing through, but there are some excellent hiking opportunities nearby as well.
Can you see Crazy Horse from Mount Rushmore?
Located off US 385/16, 5 miles north of Custer and 17 miles southwest of Mount Rushmore, this location is easy to find. Without paying to enter, the sculpture is not truly visible.

Is it possible to view the Crazy Horse Memorial from the road? Yes, it is accessible from Highway 16. (runs between Hill City and the town of Custer). There was a good pullout on the east side of the road, near the entrance, where we could stop and rest.
